January is the most important month to get honest about cash flow for your business.
Most cash flow problems don’t come from one big mistake. They come from small blind spots that compound quickly. This month is about removing those blind spots as I noted in a recent post about how we’re structuring and writing for the new year. More focused on topics by month for you.
Start with clarity, not forecasts (even though these matter!!)
Know exactly how much cash is in the bank today
Identify what cash is already committed in the next 30 days
Separate “expected” cash from cash you can rely on
Find the quiet cash leaks hurting your business
Past-due receivables that are not being actively followed up
Subscriptions and expenses that crept in last year
Timing gaps where cash leaves long before it comes back
Reset core habits early and often with your team
Review your AR aging weekly, not monthly
Confirm payment dates instead of waiting on checks
Check bank balances proactively, not after issues arise
Discipline beats optimism
Veteran leaders know this well as the structure we had in the service was nothing like that in the civilian world (or at least it hasn’t been for me). You don’t plan based on best-case scenarios. You plan based on reality, constraints, and control. Cash flow deserves the same approach and get that figured out now vs Nov 2026.
January sets the tone for the entire year. Clear visibility now prevents stress later so it’s time to step up your game you all.
